The National Laboratory for the Production and Analysis of Biotechnological Molecules and Drugs (so called after the Spanish initials LAMMB, Laboratorio Nacional para la Producción y Análisis de Moléculas y Medicamentos Biotecnológicos) is a laboratory from the Institute of Biotechnology (IBt) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) that aims to provide characterization services for biotechnological molecules and drugs, for the IBt academia as well as for external users, assigned to researching or educational institutions, both from the governmental and private sectors.

The LAMMB is comprised by the Laboratory for the Production and Analysis of Biotechnological Molecules and Drugs, both complementing the National Laboratory, and having long-standing expertise in molecular biology and infrastructure fields.

The LAMMB is a service laboratory from the Institute of Biotechnology of the UNAM. We have:

  • Global scale and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
  • Highly qualified staff.
  • Standardized procedures and validated methods.
  • ISO-9001-2015.

Third-party Services
The LAMMB, since its foundation in 2016, is one of the different service laboratories of the Institute of Biotechnology of the UNAM. It serves as a facilitator that allows, not only using the LAMMB infrastructure, but also the Institute of Biotechnology facilities due to its interinstitutional cooperation. It has the support of the following units and laboratories:
  • Proteomics.
  • Massive Sequencing and Bioinformatics.
  • Synthesis and Sequence of Oligonucleotides.
  • Transgenic Rodents.
  • Pilot plant.
  • The National Laboratory of Advanced Microscopy.
In addition, there are a significant number of researching groups specialized in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. All this is done in a national-regulation-compliance environment such as ISO/IEC 17025:2005, NOM-177-SSA1-2013 and the international guidelines like ISO 9001: 2015.
Corporate Structure

The LAMMB is an integral component of the Institute of Biotechnology (IBt), of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The IBt has "internal regulations" which designate its legal character, physical nature, functions and objectives, structure and organization, staff and representatives’ partnership forms.

The LAMMB responsibilities and assignments are detailed in the "Rules and Regulations” of the National Laboratory for the Production and Analysis of Biotechnological Molecules and Drugs, and in the LAMMB "Operating Manual,” which describes the operational capacity of the IBt associated units. On March 24th, 2015; the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) authorized the LAMMB as an authorized third party to perform the characterization and preclinical assessment of biotechnological drugs.

The LAMMB is organized by a Technical Committee, a Chief Operating Officer and the Academic Technicians associated to the IBt, who have an extensive experience in the fields in which LAMMB operates, since they have the capacity to make decisions and improve current processes. This Technical Committee is chaired by Octavio Tonatiuh Ramírez-Reivich, PhD, who is a researcher with a distinguished professional career in the biotechnological-pharmaceutical field and who also serves as the Academic Head of the LAMMB. In turn, Dr Ramírez-Reivich coordinates the Chief Operating Officer, the latter having wide-ranging technical experience in the protein characterization methodologies. The LAMMB Senior Leadership comprises the Technical Committee, the Academic Head and the Chief Operating Officer. The Senior Leadership is committed to the deployment of a quality management system for providing an excellent service. In this sense, the quality assurance (QA) area generates and guarantees the implementation of the quality management system. Thus, Senior Leadership and QA are also charged with ensuring that the LAMMB provides a quality service in compliance with the Mexican Official Standards NOM-177-SSA1-2013, ISO/IEC 17025: 2005, and ISO 9001: 2015. Quality Assurance Department reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, who in turn reports to the Technical Manager and to the Technical Committee. The LAMMB is also comprised by Area Leaders and Chemical Analysts for the Physicochemical Analyses, Biological and Power Tests, Validation of Analytical Methods and Analytical Development; as well as Quality Assurance Specialists.
